Workbenches

A Workbench is the object. Open an item and you are in one.

Open an item

A Workbench is the screen for one item. Click a row in a library or in Uncategorized. You are in a Workbench.

The surface matches the media. A video is not a PDF reader with a play button glued on.

What ships

Video. Play, scrub, notes beside the player.

Audio. Waveform and transport. Position follows playback.

Image. The picture, at a size you can actually see.

Document. PDFs and text open in Recall. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint open as readers. Word is a reading copy of the body. Excel is sheet tabs and a table (first 200 rows). PowerPoint is a filmstrip and the current slide. Macros never run. Open in Word / Excel / PowerPoint hands the file to the app on this PC. Recall does not edit or save the Office file.

Older .doc, .xls, and .ppt files ingest, then open in the desktop app only.

Course. Lessons in a list. YouTube playlists can import as a course. There is no Udemy importer.

Code. The file as text, with the path still on disk.

Link. Live, Reader, and Offline. Reader is HTTP plus Readability. It does not run page JavaScript. Heavy sites stay thin.

Social. A saved post you chose to keep. Some platforms need a key you supply.

Product. A product page you saved, not a store.

File. The fallback when Recall does not have a typed surface yet. Identity, path, and open-on-disk.

Notes are beside the item

You can write a note on a Workbench. Exported notes can show up in Related Assets. Notes are not the product. The file is.

Search can find text Recall extracted (after you open the file once, or after extract runs). That includes body text from Word, sheet text from Excel, and slide text from PowerPoint.

What this is not

No flash cards. No graph of backlinks. No team sharing. A Workbench is one object, on this machine.
